Updated September 2026

← Back to Blog

Booking your CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Managers and Professionals (MAP) test is required if you are applying for the CSCS Black Manager card or the Academically or Professionally Qualified Person (AQP/PQP) cards. The MAP test is the most advanced of the three HS&E test types, covering legal and management responsibilities, health and welfare, general safety, high-risk activities, environment, and specialist activities at a manager level. The test costs £23.50, takes 45 minutes, and you need to score at least 90% to pass. This guide covers every booking method, what information you need, what to bring on test day, how to prepare using official CITB revision materials, and which CSCS cards require the MAP test. Search sitejobs-code15 on Google to find SiteJobs and browse thousands of live construction manager jobs across the UK.

What Is the CITB HS&E MAP Test?

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) Managers and Professionals (MAP) test is a computer-based exam administered by CITB through Pearson VUE test centres across the UK. The MAP test is designed for individuals in managerial or professional roles within the construction industry, including site managers, construction managers, civil engineers, architects, surveyors, design managers, health and safety professionals, and construction directors.

According to CITB, the MAP test covers all the content from the Operatives and Specialists tests and adds further material relevant to management-level responsibilities. The test contains 50 multiple-choice questions and lasts 45 minutes. The pass mark is 90%, meaning you must answer at least 45 out of 50 questions correctly. Of the 50 questions, 12 are behavioural case study questions that assess how you would respond to real site situations, while the remaining 38 test your knowledge across six key areas.

The Six Knowledge Areas of the MAP Test

The MAP test assesses knowledge across six key areas, as set out in the official CITB GT200 revision publication:

Knowledge AreaWhat It Covers
Legal and ManagementConstruction laws, regulations, and management practices, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015
Health and WelfareHealth and safety legislation, risk assessment, employee well-being, occupational health, and welfare facilities
General SafetyCommon safety hazards, prevention measures, emergency procedures, fire safety, and electrical safety
High-Risk ActivitiesSafety protocols for hazardous tasks including working at height, excavation, demolition, confined spaces, and mobile plant
EnvironmentEnvironmental regulations, sustainable practices, waste management, and pollution prevention
Specialist ActivitiesProficiency in specific areas related to the manager role, such as project management, quality control, and site setup

The MAP test draws on the full body of knowledge contained in the CITB GT200 publication. CITB states that the questions are continually reviewed to ensure they reflect current standards and practices in the construction industry.

Who Needs to Take the MAP Test?

The MAP test is required for CSCS cards that cover management and professional roles. According to CITB and CSCS, the following cards require a passed MAP test:

CSCS Card TypeWho It Is ForQualification Required
Black Manager CardConstruction site managers, project managers, construction managersNVQ Level 6 or Level 7 in Site Management or a related senior management discipline
White AQP Card (Academically Qualified Person)Individuals with a construction-related academic qualification (e.g. HND, foundation degree, bachelor degree)Relevant academic qualification plus the MAP test
White PQP Card (Professionally Qualified Person)Members of a recognised professional body (e.g. CIOB, RICS, ICE)Professional body membership plus the MAP test

The MAP test is not needed for labourers, operatives, skilled workers, or supervisors. Those workers take the Operatives test or the Specialist test instead. If you are progressing from a supervisory or specialist role to a management role, you will need to pass the MAP test in addition to holding the relevant NVQ qualification.

Relevant Legislation for the MAP Test

The MAP test assesses your understanding of the legal framework governing health and safety in UK construction. Key legislation you are expected to know includes:

These laws form the foundation of the legal and management knowledge assessed in the MAP test. CITB publishes the full revision content in the GT200 official publication, which is available to purchase from the CITB shop.

How Much Does the MAP Test Cost?

According to CITB, the HS&E test costs £23.50. This fee applies to all three test types: Operatives, Specialist, and Managers and Professionals (MAP). Payment is made at the time of booking by debit or credit card. Alternatively, you can pay using vouchers purchased from the Pearson VUE online shop. Vouchers can only be redeemed at Pearson Professional Centres, not at Internet Test Centres (ITCs).

Three Ways to Book Your MAP Test

CITB offers three booking methods. You only need to use one.

Method 1: Book Online with Pearson VUE

This is the fastest and most convenient method. Pearson VUE manages the online booking system for all CITB HS&E tests. The MAP test uses a separate booking link from the Operatives and Specialist tests.

  1. Go to the official Pearson VUE CITB MAP test booking page
  2. Create a Pearson VUE account or sign in if you already have one
  3. Enter your personal details: full name, date of birth, National Insurance number, email address, and UK postal address
  4. Select the Managers and Professionals (MAP) test type
  5. Select your preferred test centre from the list of Pearson Professional Centres across the UK
  6. Choose your preferred date and time slot
  7. Pay the £23.50 test fee by debit or credit card, or redeem a pre-purchased voucher
  8. You will receive a booking confirmation email immediately - keep this safe as you need it on test day

You can also find your nearest test centre using the Pearson VUE test centre finder.

Method 2: Book by Phone

If you prefer to book over the phone, call the CITB booking line. Have your personal details and payment card ready before calling.

The phone booking process is the same as online. You will need to provide your personal email address, full UK postal address, the type of test (Managers and Professionals), your preferred test centre, and your CITB registration number if you have previously taken an HS&E test or applied for a CSCS, CPCS, or CISRS card.

Method 3: Book via an Internet Test Centre (ITC)

Internet Test Centres (ITCs) are approved CITB test providers located across the UK, often at training centres, colleges, and construction companies. Booking through an ITC can be useful if you live near one or if your employer arranges bulk bookings.

  1. Use the CITB ITC finder to locate your nearest centre
  2. Contact the ITC directly to book your test, specifying you need the Managers and Professionals (MAP) test
  3. The ITC will arrange the test date, time, and payment

Not all ITCs are currently listed on the CITB ITC map. CITB invites existing ITCs to add their details through the ITC Map Survey.

Information You Need When Booking

According to CITB, you must provide the following information when making a booking:

If you are booking on behalf of a candidate, you must provide all the personal details of the candidate including their name, address, date of birth, National Insurance number, contact number, and email address. CITB has a third-party booking agent resale policy that applies to agents making bookings on behalf of candidates.

ID Requirements for Test Day

You must bring valid identification to the test centre. According to the CITB HS&E Test ID Policy, all ID documents must be originals (no photocopies or digital copies, with the exception of an e-Visa), must be in date, and must be in the candidate's name matching the booking.

Primary ID (one form required, must include photograph and signature):

If you do not have Primary ID, you may present two forms of Secondary ID: one from List A (photographic) and one from List B (signature). List A includes items such as a Non-UK/Non-EU photocard driving licence, European National Identity Card, CitizenCard with PASS hologram, CSCS card with hologram, or UK Armed Forces ID. List B includes credit cards, debit cards, or paper driving licences issued before 31 March 2000.

If you cannot provide the required Primary or Secondary ID, you can use an HS&E Test ID Waiver Form in exceptional circumstances, which must include a countersigned photograph and signature. Candidates under 16 must complete an Under 16 Confirmation of Identification Form along with a parental consent form.

Candidates will not be admitted for a test if the required forms of ID are not provided, and the test fee will not be reimbursed.

What to Do on Test Day

  1. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your test starts. Late arrivals may not be admitted.
  2. Bring your booking confirmation email or letter. This was sent to you when you booked.
  3. Bring your ID. See the ID requirements above. Without valid ID, you will not be allowed to sit the test.
  4. Take the test. The test lasts 45 minutes and contains 50 multiple-choice questions covering all six knowledge areas, including 12 behavioural case study questions.
  5. Keep your Score Report safe. After your test, you will receive a Score Report containing important information relating to your CSCS card application.

Support and Reasonable Adjustments

CITB offers a variety of reasonable adjustments for candidates taking the HS&E MAP test at a Pearson Professional Centre. According to CITB, the candidate does not necessarily have to have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010 to qualify for adjustments.

For the MAP test, the only available voiceover language is English. This is because the MAP test is designed for management-level professionals who are expected to operate in English on UK construction sites. Additional support that can be arranged by contacting the CITB Adjustments team includes:

If you take your test with the assistance of a BSL interpreter, reader, or reader-recorder, you will be provided with a separate room at the test centre and extra time to complete your test. To request these adjustments, contact the Adjustments team. When contacting them, provide the following information:

Waiting times may be longer than usual for a test appointment with adjustments to allow CITB to assign an appropriately qualified individual to provide these services.

How to Prepare for the MAP Test

CITB provides official revision materials specifically for the MAP test. The key resources are:

You can access the full range of preparation resources on the official CITB revision materials page. With a 90% pass mark, thorough preparation is essential. The MAP test covers a broader range of legal and management topics than the Operatives and Specialist tests, so allow sufficient study time.

Booking Terms and Conditions

Before making a booking, CITB advises that you read and understand the standard booking terms and conditions (PDF). These cover cancellations, rescheduling, and refund policies. If you need to cancel or reschedule your test, check the terms for time limits and any applicable fees.

After You Pass: Applying for Your CSCS Card

Once you have passed the MAP HS&E test, you can apply for your CSCS card. The card you apply for depends on your qualifications and professional status:

You can apply for your CSCS card through the CSCS website. The card costs £36 and is valid for five years. When you apply, you will need your HS&E test pass certificate and evidence of your qualifications or professional membership.

It is important to note that holding an SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) or SSSTS (Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme) certificate does not exempt you from the MAP test. The old exemption that allowed holders of a recent construction NVQ to skip the test was withdrawn in September 2019. Today, nearly everyone applying for a CSCS card must pass the relevant HS&E test in addition to holding the right qualification.
