What Does a Joiner Do?

Joiners work with timber and timber-based products to create, install and repair building components. According to the Go Construct careers portal, the role involves measuring, marking up, cutting, shaping, fitting and finishing timber using a range of hand and power tools. Joiners install floor joists, roof trusses, wall partitions, doors, staircases, skirting boards, cupboards and kitchens.

In the UK construction industry, the term "joiner" is often used interchangeably with "carpenter", particularly in northern England and Scotland. The Skills England Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship standard (ST0264) recognises two distinct pathways:

  • Site Carpenter: works on construction sites or in domestic and commercial premises, preparing and fixing building components from initial erection through to final fixtures and fittings
  • Architectural Joiner (Bench Joiner): works in a workshop producing timber-based building components such as doors, windows, units and staircases, which are then transported to site for installation

Many tradespeople are qualified in both disciplines. The distinction is historical rather than practical, but it matters when choosing your career path and when employers advertise vacancies.

Joiner Pay Rates 2026

The National Careers Service groups joiners with carpenters and reports annual pay guidance from £24,000 for starters to £40,000 for experienced workers. ONS data from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) 2026 shows median weekly earnings for full-time employees rose 5.8% to £811.20 in April 2026, and carpenters and joiners (SOC 5316) track close to this national median.

Typical joiner pay rates by experience level:

  • Joiner Apprentice (Level 2): £12,000-£18,000/year (apprentice minimum wage applies)
  • Newly Qualified Joiner (CSCS blue card, NVQ Level 2): £18-22/hour (£24,000-£32,000/year)
  • Experienced Site Joiner: £22-28/hour (£32,000-£42,000/year)
  • Lead Joiner / Chargehand: £25-30/hour (£38,000-£48,000/year)
  • Day rate (self-employed/CIS): £160-£240/day
  • Bench Joiner (workshop-based): £14-22/hour (£22,000-£35,000/year)

London and the South East pay 15-25% above the national average. ONS regional data for 2025 shows London median annual pay for carpenters and joiners at £38,011, compared with £30,656 in Yorkshire and the Humber. Major projects such as HS2 and large commercial fit-outs in central London have pushed rates for experienced joiners above £30/hour with travel and accommodation allowances.

What Tickets Do Joiners Need?

Joinery is a skilled trade. The following certifications are required or strongly expected by employers:

  • CSCS Blue Skilled Worker card: The standard requirement for site access. Requires an NVQ Level 2 in Wood Occupations (Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery pathway) and a passed CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. The Operatives test costs £22.50 and is booked through Pearson VUE. Apply for the card at cscs.uk.com. See our complete CSCS Card Guide for full details.
  • CSCS Gold Advanced Craft card: For joiners holding an NVQ Level 3 in Wood Occupations. Demonstrates advanced craft competency and is increasingly required for lead joiner and supervisory roles.
  • Asbestos awareness: Mandatory for work on buildings constructed before 2000. Training must be UKATA approved. See our guide on asbestos operative jobs.
  • IPAF card (MEWP operator): Joiners who use mobile elevating work platforms for high-level installation work need IPAF 3a or 3b certification. Verify an IPAF card at ipaf.org. See our guide on checking an IPAF card.
  • First aid (EFAW or FAW): Strongly preferred, particularly on remote sites.
  • Fire door installation training: Required for specialist fire door fitting roles. The BM TRADA Q-Mark Fire Door Installation scheme is the industry-recognised certification.

Health and Safety for Joiners

Joinery involves specific health risks that are regulated under UK law. The HSE guidance on wood dust states that carpenters and joiners are four times more likely to develop occupational asthma compared with other UK workers. Hardwood dust is classified as a carcinogen and can cause cancer, particularly of the nose.

The following legislation applies directly to joinery work:

  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH, SI 2002/2677): Wood dust is a hazardous substance under COSHH. Employers and self-employed tradespeople must control exposure. The Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) for hardwood dust is 3mg/m3 and for softwood dust is 5mg/m3, based on an 8-hour time-weighted average. Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) must be provided at woodworking machines.
  • Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 (SI 2005/1643): Woodworking machinery and power tools routinely exceed the 80 dB(A) lower exposure action value. Hearing protection and noise assessment are required.
  • Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (SI 1992/3003): Joiners handle heavy timber, sheet materials (MDF, plywood) and pre-assembled components. Risk assessments and mechanical handling aids are required where manually handling loads presents a risk of injury.
  • Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 2022 (SI 2022/8): Employers must provide suitable PPE including respiratory protective equipment (RPE), eye protection, hearing protection and cut-resistant gloves.
  • Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974: The overarching duty of care applies to all joinery work, whether on site or in a workshop.

See our full guides on PPE in construction and health and safety in UK construction for broader guidance.

How to Become a Joiner

There are three main routes into joinery, all recognised by the Go Construct careers portal:

  • Apprenticeship: The Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship (ST0264) is the most structured route. It lasts 18-24 months and combines on-site or workshop experience with off-the-job training. You complete an NVQ Level 2 in Wood Occupations and earn while you learn. The apprenticeship has two pathways: Site Carpentry and Architectural Joinery.
  • College course: A Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery provides the skills and knowledge needed to start work. Many colleges offer this as a one-year full-time course. You then top up to an NVQ Level 2 once you are employed on site through the EWPA (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment) route if you have sufficient experience.
  • Direct entry with experience: If you have site experience as a labourer or mate, you can apply directly to contractors. You may start as a joiner's assistant and progress as your skills develop. You will need a CSCS card - initially a red trainee card, upgrading to a blue skilled worker card once you achieve your NVQ Level 2.

Physical fitness, manual dexterity and an awareness of health and safety are essential. Most employers will assess practical skills during an initial site trial.

Career Progression

With experience and additional qualifications, joiners can progress to:

  • Lead joiner / chargehand: Supervising a small team on site. Requires NVQ Level 3 and a CSCS Gold Advanced Craft card.
  • Joinery foreman: Managing the full joinery team and coordinating with the principal contractor. See our foreman jobs guide.
  • Site supervisor or site manager: Overall site management. Requires SMSTS qualification. See our site supervisor and site manager guides.
  • Self-employed contractor: Many experienced joiners move to CIS or limited company status, commanding day rates of £180-£240.
  • Specialist roles: Fire door installation, heritage joinery, or shopfitting offer higher rates for niche skills.
