For subcontractors paid under the Construction Industry Scheme.
CIS deduction is taken from your gross pay by the contractor and paid to HMRC on your behalf. It counts towards your Self Assessment tax bill, which also depends on your business expenses. Many self employed workers get a refund after filing. Travel and materials are not included here.
For workers paid through an employer's payroll.
Income tax uses the 2026/27 personal allowance of £12,570 and the 20% basic rate up to £50,270 total earnings, 40% above that. National Insurance is 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year, 2% above. Holiday pay is calculated as 5.6 weeks at a contractual 8-hour day (28 days × 8h), the way construction payrolls pay it. Pension is the 5% minimum auto-enrolment employee contribution and gets tax relief. Overtime premiums, umbrella deductions and student loans are not included.
